Defining Our Worship

A Question that often causes problems, the meaning of the term worship has caused congregations to split, and tempers to flare.  What worship incorporates can be found in the New Testament.  The early church was continuously devoted to the apostle's teaching (preaching), fellowship (assembling), the breaking of bread (the Lord's Supper), and to prayer (Acts 2:42).  This is the first Biblical example we have of how the early saints participated in worship of our Savior Jesus Christ.

Music

People make a major deal out of music, when actually it is only PART of the worship service.  If a church is traditional in its musical scope, it is often viewed as being stuck in the past, and if a church is contemporary musically, it is often labeled as liberal or emotion-driven.  When Paul tells the Ephesian church to be united, he isn't just talking to them--he's talking to us as well.  So how does one go and build the bridge between such differing styles--by blending the two!

Mannsville has taken the challenge of building a service that is not just pleasing to the audience, but more importantly, pleasing to the Lord.  The songs that are presented are BOTH traditional and contemporary, and allows the worshiper to do just that--WORSHIP THE LORD.  Rather than see two styles of service that split the congregation down the line, we feel that God's Word expresses a need for unity in spirit, in truth, and in reverent worship.

The Lord's Supper

The Lord's Supper is practiced weekly at Mannsville Christian, as it was in the time of Paul (Acts 20:7).  This event is the centerpiece of worship, as it represents the Gospel message in its entirety (the body of Christ broken, and His blood shed for our sins).  Some feel that this makes the event meaningless or simply routine. However, it isn't about the quantity of events that take place, but the QUALITY at which the worshiper is willing to examine themselves.  As mentioned in our beliefs statement, We have to maintain the same amount of attention to worship in our observance of the Lord's Supper as we do to singing praises to Him and leading others to Christ.

The Gospel Preached

In recent times, the preaching of God's Word has taken a backseat to music, creative ministries, and other activities.  However, Romans 10 has a great deal to talk about when it comes to preachers and the proclamation of the Gospel.  "How will they hear unless someone tells them?"  Where ever the Word was preached, there was a response by the people (the day of Pentecost, in the Temple courtyard, etc).  Today, while music is a powerful means of communicating our love to Christ, the Bible cannot be put on the back burner.  Preaching is important, and at Mannsville, the Bible is of the utmost importance.  Where the Bible speaks, we apply and listen; where it is silent, there is freedom to examine and determine for one's self.  Thus, for those in the audience who may not know Christ in their lives, it provides an opportunity for self-examination and possibly, commitment to a life with Christ.
